A summary dismissal is a dismissal for urgent cause. The reason for the dismissal must be so serious that an employer cannot be required to continue the employment agreement. A summary dismissal must be given almost immediately after the employer has become aware of the reasons for the dismissal. If it is necessary for the employer to investigate the circumstances, an employee will often need to be suspended immediately pending the investigation.

An employee who has been dismissed summarily will as a rule not receive any benefits. After a summary dismissal, an employee only has two months in which he can request the court to annul the dismissal.
